Retopology in Blender
What does Retopology mean?
Retopology is the process of creating a mesh with a simplified topology based on a high-resolution 3D model.
The original models to start with are usually produced from 3D scans or digitally sculpted models. Especially the latter often have a lot of details and micro-polygons because the 3D artist focuses on aesthetics and harmony and not on technical aspects related to topology, thus creating geometries that are very complex to manage. This is where Retopology comes to our aid.
Mesh simplified with the Retopology process allows you to:
1 – Contain the number of polygons in order to speed up the loading and management of the model in terms of performance, a fundamental characteristic in the world of gaming.
2 – Creating precise seams in the model with correct edge loops facilitates the UV creation process.
3 – retopologised models can be used for rigging and animations
4 – The model is much smaller in terms of file size compared to the original high-definition model.
Retopology in Blender
Blender, an Open Source program that can be downloaded from blender.org, is a well-known and highly appreciated 3D software.
It is used by creators of 3D content, simulation, animation and Vfx, and allows any 3D object to be retopologised.
Blender does not offer native tools dedicated to retopology, but thanks to specific add-ons such as Retopoflow3 and the flexibility of the software, it is easy to set up a customised workflow for this purpose.

With Blender you can use different ways like “Poly Build” available from the Toolbar in Edit Mode or with the use of Modifiers like Shrinkwrap and Mirror.
In both methods it is convenient to start with loops of the key edges, as in the case of faces with the eyes and lips and then the other parts.
Finally, a very quick method that can generate a uniform mesh made up only of quads is the “Remesh” command.
